Eclectic British singer / songwriter, Amy Winehouse was found dead in her London flat yesterday.  The sad news may not have come as surprising to the public but it still caused a lot of heartache to her fans and closest friends.  It has been known to the public that Amy Winehouse had been in and out of rehab for her cocaine and crack addiction.  She even made a song about her opinions on going to a facility and this song, Rehab, made a mark in the international music charts.  Her 2006 music album, Back to Black, garnered her six Grammy nominations and 5 Grammy awards including Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist.  And if you can still recall, despite her numerous nominations, Amy Winehouse was banned from entering the United States due to her drug addiction.  Nevertheless, the singer took it in stride and was able to perform live in London and broadcasted it simultaneously during the Grammy Awards.  Amy Winehouse is the first ever female British singer to have won 5 Grammy Awards on the same year.

As official reports regarding Amy Winehouse’s cause of death are still being awaited, many speculate that the 27 year old singer succumbed to her alcohol and drug addiction.  Many believe that her death was caused by an overdose.  However, a few years back it has been reported that Amy was suffering from a lung disorder called emphysema which was caused by substance abuse.  She was reminded and cautioned by her physician that continuous use of drugs may cause her lungs to collapse and lead to her death.  As prophetic as it sounds, it has brought Amy Winehouse to her demise.

Her musical career may be short lived; yet, it is undeniable that Amy touched a lot of people’s lives through her music.  The ingenious in her was not brought about by her addiction; rather, her addiction overshadowed her musical talent. May it serve as a lesson to those who are trekking the same path as Amy’s and choose to turn their backs on these illegal substances.

Many of her showbiz friends, acquaintances, and even those who simply knew her through her music expressed their condolences on social media websites.  Kelly Osbourne, who claims to be Amy’s good friend, expressed “I can’t even breathe right now I’m crying so hard I just lost 1 of my best friends. I love you forever Amy & will never forget the real you!”  Film critic Richard Roeper even expressed his grief to those who lost their battle against addiction at a very tender age of 27, “”Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones, Kurt Cobain and now Amy Winehouse: all died at 27.”  Finally, in the lost list of musicians and artists who paid respects to Amy, Kelly Clarkson wrote a very enraged and emotional message, “”I have been that low emotionally and mentally and that is overwhelming. I keep asking myself why some of us are spared and the others are made examples. I’m very angry and sad. I don’t know why it’s bothering me so much. Sometimes I think this job will be the death of us all, or at least the emotional death of us all.”

There are still no news as to whether the remains of Amy Winehouse will be available for viewing or if she will be immediately put to her final resting place.  It might still take a while as police officials are ruling out any signs of foul play to figure out the real cause of death.  As we all wait for any news regarding this matter, let us say a short prayer for her soul to find peace.  Amy Winehouse may have met a lot of bumps and curves just to find the kind of happiness and sense of fulfillment that she was looking, and hopefully she is now happy and at peace with herself and her creator.  Rest in peace, Amy!  Mortality might have taken you away from the physical world, but your music will live on forever.
